Maui residents and visitors are blessed to be in the center of the world's "Salad Bowl" of cultures, particularly those of the Pacific Islands and Asia. The summer months offer several opportunities to get in a taste of each.
Obon--a Japanese festival celebrating the souls of ancestors', similar to the Mexican "el Dia de los Muertos" -- is off to a new season on Maui. A family reunion of sorts, the festival is celebrated at various Buddhist Missions throughout Maui during the summer months, and includes both a service and a dance known as the Bon-Odori.
Lahaina Shingon Mission in West Maui kicked off the Obon season last weekend: This weekend's service will be held on 7 p.m. Saturday, June 14th at the Puunene Nichiren Mission, 9 Ani St. in Kahului. Along with the festive environment and music, concession stands provide local food plates and miscellaneous goods. Music, food and dance begin at 8 p.m.
These events are open to the public. For more information on the Puunene festival, call (808) 871-4831.
