While the event highlights ancient Hawaiian canoe carving, sailing, and navigational techniques, several other tradition Pacific Islander skills and customs are also featured, such as tiki carving, poi pounding, tattooing, taro farming, and the ancient art of house thatching.
Beginning with an ancient greeting ceremony, the carving will commence on the second day of the event and continue throughout the week. Displays of drums, surfboards, and canoes form previous festivals will be available for viewing in the Banyan Tree Park. From 9am to 5pm daily, throughout the event, an island-style arts and crafts fair will be held under the Banyan Tree, with stage performances by Polynesian dancers and local musicians. Demonstrations and workshops of Polynesian arts and skills are scheduled at various times throughout the week at both the Banyan Tree Park and The Wharf Cinema. On the final day, the Parade of Canoes along Front Street sets in motion the closing festivities and ceremony, featuring food booths and souvenir t-shirt booths, live performances, and special guests. The completed canoes are then launched, and the ceremony ends at sunset.
Several festivals and events take place throughout the year, in Lahaina, Kapalua, and Kaanapali. This is one of the many reasons West Maui is so popular with both visitors and Kama'aina (residents).
