March 14, 2008 | If you're looking for a good reason to make the drive from Kaanapali, Lahaina, or anywhere in West Maui this weekend, here it is: Two-time Grammy Award nominee and multiple Na Hoku Hanohano Awards winner Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom -- one of Hawaii's most respected musical artists and cultural icons, and world-renowned performer -- is coming to the Maui Arts & Cultural Center this Saturday, March 15th.
Famed for her astounding vocal range and Hawaiian-style female falsetto singing, this singer, songwriter, and performer was classically trained (having earned her BFA in Musical Theater), and possesses a love for Jazz and R&B as well as traditional Hawaiian musical forms.
Amy won numerous Na Hoku Hanohano awards for such categories as Song of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year, Album of the Year, and Hawaiian Album of the Year. Her album "Hawaiian Tradition" was the first album written solely in the Hawaiian language to achieve a World Billboard Charts ranking. And two of her albums, "Amy & Willie Live" in 2005 and "Generation Hawaii" in 2007, have been nominated for Grammy's. |
